Situated upon a ridge along the Azat River Valley across from the villages of Goght and Garni, you will find this beautiful monastery. Historical accounts of Mkhitar Airivanatsy mention that Gevorg Marzpetuni had originally built the church in the 10th century. According to inscriptions at the site, it was rebuilt in 1013 by Grigor Pahlavuni (990-1058). The bulk of the monastic complex is 12-14th c., rebuilt in the early 18th c. by the Catholicos Astvatsatur after being ruined in the great 1679 earthquake.
