Nestled in the center of Avan, the most northeastern district of Yerevan, we find an impressive site! Inhabited since pre-Christian times, the ancient village of Avan was only absorbed by Yerevan in the mid 60s. It is here we find the very important semi-ruined Holy Mother of God Katoghike Church. The history surrounding the church is very interesting and its architecture has major significance.
The church is the oldest surviving one (albeit semi-ruined) in Yerevan and was built between the years 591 and 602.
